Adapting Reptile Cage Plans To Suit Your Needs By Mark Chapple, Fri Dec 9th
Many if the people who make their own snake or other reptilecages adapt other designs or continue to improve on the designsthey have already used. When you adapt a cage design from basic plan you can use it tomake a reptile or snake cage to suit your own needs. You mayhave a space that is not quite suitable for the size of theoriginal design. You may want to adapt a half built cage, acloset or an old cupboard. You may want to make a specificlength, height or width. You may have limited access tomaterials or you may have an existing stockpile of materialsthat want to use. In all cases, it is important to have a clear idea of what youwant the finished product to look like and how you are going toconstruct it.
Detailed plans can contain a lot of important information forbuilding reptile cages, but you should remember they are notdefinitive. For example many people who have used the "How toBuild Reptile Enclosures" book from this site have altered theplans, in some cases quite significantly, to suit their needsand their skills. While they all acknowledge the benefits of using the book as alaunching point for their cage building, they found it helpedthem think about
how they might construct a snake or otherreptile cage and the sorts of things that are needed in reptilecage eg heat mats, basking lights, UV lights, misting systems, substrates, decorations such as artificial walls, artificialtrees and branches, and how these can be made and placed in thecage. It also gave them valuable information about constructiontechniques, making cages stronger and some useful hints and tips. Click here for some examples of cages made by people whopurchased the "How to build reptile enclosures" below. Theoriginal plans have been used by each of these individuals as astarting point for their cages and then adapted to suit theirneeds and skills. Many people do not want to adapt the cages but want to buildthem exactly as described then there is enough information toallow you to do that to. Either way, a plan is an important partof the building process. The main thing is to have some fun building something foryourself and your pet (and save a bit of money).
