Snakeheads - Bringers Of Fear, Myths And Controversy By William Berg, Fri Dec 9th
Snakeheads have some pretty terrible nicknames such asFrankenfish. They have gotten a lot of media attention latelysince they found a breeding population in a pond in Maryland. They have since been found living in other waters in southernUSA but are still not to be considered established in any area. This is largely due to massive government work to keep them fromestablishing themselves. The fear for snakeheads has its basis in the fact that they areferocious predators that can swallow fish of half their ownsize. This has meant that many now fear that Snakeheads could domassive damage to the eco systems if the where ever to establishthemselves in the US. A result of this fear is the ban to importsnakeheads that was imposed 2003. This has however not stoppedlive snakeheads from being available in Asian food markets andthe aquarium trade. They are originally found in Africa and South East Asia wherethey are appreciated food sources. Snakeheads vary in size fromvery small to very large. The largest species can reach over oneyard (almost one meter) in length. Snakeheads differ from manyother fishes due to the fact that they breathe air by usingsomething called a labyrinth which enables them to consumeoxygen from the atmosphere.
This means that they can live forlong periods on land as long as they can stay moist. They usethis ability to walk to new areas to live and feed in.Snakeheads drown if they can't access the surface to get air.
They are popular aquarium fishes and many aquarists areopposing the decision to ban snakeheads and believe thatsnakehead import for the aquarium trade should be allowed. Theybelieve that import at the very least should be permitted incolder states where snakeheads can't survive in the wild. Theyhave a point in this believe since snakeheads re unable tosurvive in most areas in the USA due to the fact that they needwarm water to survive. Allowing snakehead import in some stateswill however make it harder to enforce the ban in the stateswhere they could survive which could serve to justify the nationwide ban. There is no doubt that the Snakeheads has triggered fear, mythsand controversy in the USA About the author:Read more about the group of fish called Snakehead fish and whichare called
