The filters still operate when people dream, so the dreams have many strange images. Freud came up with a standard set of distortions that were present in dreams, and applied these in interpretation. This was used to interpret the images.
For Freud nightmares weren't insecure thoughts. Instead they were the result of the ego being frustrated at not being allowed free reign. Many people think Freud always talked about sex in performing a interpretation. But Freud didn't think everything was about sex.
