Requiem For a is a book published in 1978 and a movie based on the book. The novel was written by Hubert Selby Jr., while the film was directed by Darren Aronofky. The film was nominated for some academy awards. This article details both the movie and the novel.
Since the novel came first it comes first here too. It's about a group of four related people. Their names are Harry, Marion, Tyrone, and Sara. Harry and Marion date. Tyrone is their friend. Harry's mother is named Sara. Every one of them is controlled by some dream. Each one turns to drugs in some way to try to achieve their dream, which ends badly. Sara wants to appear on Television. When a casting manager hints that she may receive a TV role, she begins taking diet pills. She ends up hospitalized. Harry, Marion, and Tyrone meanwhile make money by selling heroin. But they'll become addicted to the drug they seek to sell. Nobody ends up happy.
The movie focuses more on Sara and Harry, but still includes Marion and Tyrone. The story remains similar. It all happens in three seasons †summer, fall, winter.
Sara likes to watch infomercials. She has nothing to do but eat. She begins to become concerned over her weight. But then the infomercial producers tell her she may get a role on the commercial. She vows to fit into the red dress she once wore to Harry's graduation. To accomplish this she goes on a crazy diet.
A doctor gives her some amphetamines to help her lose weight. She takes to many, addiction develops. Signs of this addiction are overly happy personality, and constantly grinding her teeth.
Harry and Tyrone become drug dealers. Their goal is to one day be able to afford a pound of pure heroin. Marion believes that the money Harry makes as a drug dealer will allow her to purchase a clothing store. Tyrone just wants enough money to get him off the street.
In the fall Sara's addiction has worsened. As the dose she has been taking is no longer effective, she begins increasing the dosage. This soon causes her to hallucinate both about being on the infomercial and about her refrigerator moving through her house. Harry and Tyrone get arrested. They have to use what they earned in the summer to bail Tyrone our of jail. Meanwhile their addiction to the heroin they're supposed to sell grows.
The situation at the end is no better. Winter is the worst season for everyone in the movie. Harry ends up in the hospital after falling off the roof of a building, Sara's hallucinations become so bad she ends up institutionalized, Tyrone is in jail, and Marion is hopelessly addicted to heroin. Only Harry, whose pain keeps him in the real world, doesn't retreat into his own mind.
Requiem for a is pretty accurate in its depiction of addiction.
