Have you heard of The Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band? Country and folk music in America are still very popular. They go way back. A lot of performers are popular. Many lesser known groups still do quite well. Let's look at one.
It was 1966 when the Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band started. Many musicians have come and gone. Two have always remained. These are the singer guitarist Jeff Hanna and drummer Jimmy Fadden. They originally created the band in an effort to not have to work for a living.
At the start the Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band was a jug group. Early jug bands were jazz bands who added the jug into which someone would blow as a novelty. Jug bands in Memphis played the blues. A washboard was used for percussion. TV's Andy Griffith Show often featured a jug band. They were portrayed as hillbillies who first had a run in with Ernest T. Bass. Sometimes Andy performed with the group.
Buy for Me the Rain was the first single released by the Nitty-Gritty
Dirt Band. It was a top 40 hit. It was even performed at concerts with people such as Jack Benny and the Doors. That's a real difference in performing partners.
In 1968 the Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band had appeared in movies and as an extra act at concerts. They performed a song in the 1969 musical western Paint Your Wagon. They even opened for Bill Cosby at Carnegie Hall. They even performed with the immortal Dizzy Gillespie.
They switched to country and bluegrass in the 70's. They earned two Grammy nominations. They had a tour in Japan. At the Ozark Music Festival they performed in front of 350,000 people.
The Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band came in and out of the public eye throughout the late 70s through to the early 2000's. They appeared on SNL and recorded some albums in Nashville. They won two Grammy awards and one of their works was named album of the year.
