Another name for off road bikes is dirt bikes. They're used to travel off regular roads. Many people enjoy them. Here are some details.
Some people believe that all motorcycles were in the late 1800s. That was when motorcycles were first used. Roads weren't paved. So by the strictest sense of the phrase, everyone was riding off-road. Originally, motorcycle races took place on dirt paths shaped like ovals. Thus, off road races were the first races.
US had their start in the USA in 1959. A tiny bike shop started operating in Los Angeles, with a man named Honda running it. At that time the reputation of bikers was as outlaws. No self-respecting person would ride a motorcycle. There was no such thing as an off-road bike. Honda came up with an idea. He developed a clever slogan “ you meet the nicest people on Honda. Everyone heard it. The ads included pretty smiling girls riding the bikes on trails. The concept of a trail bike suddenly became popular.
Today mini are becoming popular. They cost very little which is why people like them. At most they cost
$1000. Most people can afford that. These bikes reach speeds of up to 80 miles an hour. That's not bad.
Dirt bikes are popular for many things. The bikes for each of these is slightly different. Motocross is probably the best known. This is a race on an off road track that includes ramps. These bikes can't hold a lot of fuel. They can't drive on roads. Their suspensions are often complex. The engines are tiny.
Enduro is also popular for dirt bikes. This is long distance racing through forests or trails. These bikes generally carry a lot of gas.
Track racing bikes are dirt bikes.. Track racing is done at very high speed. Tracks are dirt ovals. These bikes have no breaks. Smooth tracks mean they need no suspension. Generally they have two gears. They're often fueled by methanol. They are definitely not road legal.
So next time you think of dirt bikes, you'll know there's a lot of variety in the name.
