These events were first named scrambling by the British. Scrambles are the name given to each individual event. 1924 saw the first scramble. It grew in popularity throughout the 1930's. Gradually the bikes used in these competitions changed from practically street bikes to the bikes more similar to the off-road bikes with which we are familiar.
Suspension is the main difference in these bikes. Street bikes tend to be rigid. A street bike ride on an off road course is very uncomfortable. feature better suspension to handle the tracks. Riding on a dirt track or in the wilderness can be very bumpy.
In the 1960's Yamaha became prominent, as did Japanese bikes in general. In 1970 a Japanese dirt bike won a world championship for the first time.
Yamaha feature prominently in the Grand Prix of Motocross and the AMA Motocross Championship. These are the two major motocross series. The AMA season
is from May through September. Europe is home to the Grand Prix. But events take place in some other parts of the world. Even Australia has hosted a Grand Prix event or two.
The drivers who take part in motocross using Yamaha dirt bikes, amongst other bikes, are very physically fit. Their hearts can maintain an accelerated rate for 35 minutes In season this happens two times a day. It takes a lot of energy and endurance to control a heavy bike on a pounding track.
Yamaha are also popular in a new event, freestyle. Freestyle events include many difficult stunts. People are often amazed by what the riders can do. One professional biker use a ramp to do a backflip over the fountains at Caesars Palace. That's pretty amazing.
