amazing History Of Websters Dictionary By Henry Diaz
Allow me to detail this topic for you as this article is hopefully exactly what you have been looking for.
Websters was first created by Noah Webster in 1806. It became so popular that today the name Webster is a generic term applied to English dictionaries.
Websters was the work of Noah Webster who was born October 16, 1758 in Hartford Connecticut. His family was there since the area was first colonized. Noah's father was a farmer. He descended from John Webster who was the state governor. Noah's mother was a descendant of William Bradford the governor of the Plymouth colony.
When Noah was 16 he began attending Yale College. His college years were during the American Revolutionary war. Noah fought in the war.
At 20 Webster decided to study law. Like many people he took up teaching to earn money for school. But once he became a lawyer he realized it wasn't for him. He once again became a teacher. He failed when he tried to open his own school.
He married a socially upward woman in 1789. Despite being welcome by the upper class, he wasn't wealthy. He started a newspaper in New York with some money Alexander Hamilton loaned him. While there he became a publisher. This was the real start for Websters dictionary. He published text books
while writing for his newspaper. He served in the Connecticut House of Representatives after moving back there in 1798.
While he was teaching he found conditions rather poor. There were too many students in each classroom. The teachers were not well trained. They taught without much in the way of books or other materials. Webster wanted American kids to learn from books written in American English. So he wrote a three volume set †a speller, a grammar book, and a reader. He believed the English language needed to be rescued from English grammar that was too difficult and outdated. To him the people should create the language, rather than have some archaic language like Latin dictate it.
It was this work that led him to the eventual creation of the first Websters dictionary. He revised the again and again. And when Webster died the Merriam brothers purchased the rights to his name and his work. Today most dictionaries use the term Webster because it's so well known.
That's Websters dictionary.
