amazing History Of Webster Dictionary By Henry Diaz
Please allow me to present you this topic as it wont take long before you will get to know everything about it.
The Webster is well known. Nobody is above looking up a word or definition on occasion. It's necessary.
For many families a Webster and a good set of encyclopedias were must haves. They wanted their children to have what they needed for school. But in the modern world this is now online. It's no different than the printed copy. The Internet comes through again for making our lives better.
Webster has become a generic name. Many English dictionaries bear the name. The Merriam-Webster dictionaries descend from the original work of Noah Webster, a Lexicographer. But many other dictionaries now bear the name. These include dictionaries published by Random House.
Noah Webster began as a teacher publishing classroom aids. It wasn't until 1806 that Webster first published a dictionary. He pioneered what would later become standard elements of dictionaries. He decided that words should be spelled in the American way, rather than British. Color, for instance, instead of colour. The included words from fields other than literature. It was a task of 20 years to expand on this first dictionary.
Webster was 70 when he published his next dictionary. It had two volumes and contained 70,000 entries. The Webster
was truly born. With many revisions made by Noah's son, a new revision was released in 1840.
The Webster we know today came into being upon Webster's death. All the name and book rights to Webster were bought by George and Charles Merriam. They hired Noah Webster's son-in-law to oversee revisions. A new revised edition appeared on September 24, 1847. It was later extended into a new addition in 1859. It was illustrated.
In 1860 the Miriam company took another step forward in the development of the Webster dictionary. They engaged a Yale professor to assist with another revision. It was released in 1864. This book contained 114,000 listings. It was really the first big overhaul of Noah Webster's original work. It had the word unabridged in the title.
It was 1909 when the book really hit its stride. This was the international version. It featured twice as many drawings and over 400,000 entries. It featured a divided page. The bottom portion of the page was reserved for somewhat dead words that still needed to be covered.
It's interesting to know that like the term Kleenex, Webster is a generic term. Noah Webster started something very big.
In conclusion Id like to say thank you to you for reading this article and good luck with any issues related to this information.
