How A New Place Like Atacama Desert Can Be Your Dream Place
By Henry Diaz

Thank you for choosing to read this paper, it was written specifically to be of aid to you.

One of the driest areas in the world is the Atacama in South America. Only the cold desert, McMurdo dry valleys in Antarctica, is drier. 20 million years ago it became a desert, and the Andes mountains help keep it that way. A lot of people consider death Valley California the height of dry desert. But that area is 50 times wetter than the Atacama Desert.

It takes more than one mountain range to keep an area like the Atacama so dry. There are other geographic features and weather factors at work here. The first, of course, is those Andes. Atacama sits in the Andes rain shadow, which is the side of the mountain downwind of prevailing winds. On the opposite side moist air drops a great deal of rainfall. However, all the moisture is gone when the air makes it to the other side. As if the Andes aren't enough, rain is blocked on the other side by the Chilean Coast Range. The anti-cyclone, reverse spin area of dry air over the Pacific, multiplies the effect.

Dry means dry. Rain falls in the Atacama to the tune of only about 1 mm every year. Some areas never receive rain. There is also evidence that the entire region was completely

rain free from about 1570 to 1971. Any questions? Is it even possible to have a drought where rain hardly ever falls in the first place? There are even some riverbeds that haven't held water for 120,000 years.

The super dry dry does lend the Atacama some fame and fortune. It's considered the closest to Mars like conditions that exist on Earth. Many movies and documentaries about Mars have been filmed in this desert. In 2003 some scientists decided to conduct the same tests that the Mars landers, Viking 1 and Viking 2, had conducted on the red planet. The tests were created to search for life. Can you guess the results? There were no signs of life in the Atacama Desert. As a result, the is used as a testing ground for methods of further examining Mars.

Next time you're thirsty, consider life in the Atacama Desert. Forget a lemonade stand. In one of the driest places on Earth it could be years before you could even fill a small glass with water.

I hope the information in this article was helpful and I thank you for taking your time to read.

Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. ~Samuel Ullman
