Astronomy today on any given day might have news of meteors. The last half of 2008 was no different as meteors were certainly on the menu. Taurids in Leonids were featured in November. Into was a full moon in December washing out the Gemenids. Don't fret. Meteor shower peaks may happen during full moons, but meteors are on display for up to two weeks both before and after the peaks. So people can still see the amazing view.

In 2008 a return to the moon was on people's minds very often in today. This mission would be undertaken cooperatively by the entire world. There has even been talk of a base or colony established on the moon. Imagine that. Minus the aliens and hopefully the moon set adrift by an explosion, the TV series “Space 1999” could soon become a reality only

16 years too late.

2008 was a year of a lot of news. For much of the year many today columns were filled with news of some space garbage †a colling ammonia tank from the space station. It had been discarded into space where it orbited for many months. But eventually its orbit decayed. Some people were concerned that pieces might fall into populated areas. The good news is that it all fell into the ocean.

The good old Hubble telescope made the biggest impact in today. First the telescope was damaged when some instrument control and data formatting modules failed in September. Those were brought back on line in October. After recovery, Hubble snapped the first visible light pictures of a planet orbiting a distance sun. Talk about a hard year's work.
